Special Topic: Advancing Sustainable Infrastructure through Cross-Disciplinary Applications in Bio/Ecological Technologies
Editor(s): Prof. Yang Xiao, Prof. Hanlong Liu, Prof. Jian Chu, Prof. Julian Tao

In recent years, the convergence of biological sciences, ecological principles, and engineering disciplines has catalyzed a transformative shift in the way we design, construct, and maintain civil infrastructure. From bio-inspired structural materials to ecologically adaptive systems, the integration of biological and ecological technologies in civil engineering is fostering innovative solutions that are more sustainable, resilient, intelligent and adaptive to environmental challenges.

This emerging interdisciplinary field leverages insights from nature to address pressing issues in urbanization, climate adaptation, and infrastructure sustainability. Applications range from bio-mediated soil improvement and green building envelopes to nature-based coastal protection and ecological restoration integrated with engineered structures.

The aim of this special issue is to showcase original research and state-of-the-art developments that bridge civil/structural engineering with biological and ecological sciences. We seek contributions that highlight novel methods, experimental studies, modelling efforts, and case applications that demonstrate the potential of cross-disciplinary approaches in transforming traditional engineering paradigms.
